Wisdom for the body, submitted to the Healer
“I am the LORD that healeth thee.”Exodus 15:26
A Drop of Silver at Birth
If you were born before the 1990s, there is a good chance the first thing that touched your eyes after your mother’s face was a drop of silver.
In 1881 a German obstetrician named Carl Credé began placing a few drops of silver nitrate solution in the eyes of every newborn in his Leipzig hospital. At the time, roughly one baby in ten there developed a severe eye infection in the first days of life, picked up during birth. Many of those infections ended in blindness. After Credé’s drops, the rate fell to a fraction of one percent. Silver nitrate became standard practice across the Western world for nearly a century, until most hospitals switched to a gentler antibiotic ointment.
The point is simple: silver works against bacteria. That isn’t folklore. It is one of the oldest and best-documented antimicrobials known to man.
Silver Through the Ages
The ancients stored water and wine in silver vessels to keep them sweet. Physicians of the Greek world packed wounds with silver. Pioneers crossing the plains were said to drop a silver coin in the milk jug. And today, in modern burn units and wound clinics, silver-impregnated dressings and creams are still used to keep infection out of damaged skin.
God built properties into His creation, and men have been discovering them since the beginning.
“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” — Proverbs 25:2
What Happens While You Sleep
Here is something most people never think about. During a night’s sleep, the body sweats — often cited as up to a pint on a warm night. That moisture, along with skin cells and body oils, soaks into your sheets and works its way into the mattress. Warm, damp, and fed: that is exactly the environment bacteria love.
This is where silver can earn its keep. Sheets woven with silver fibers are designed to keep bacteria from multiplying in the fabric, which cuts down on odor and keeps the bed fresher between washings.
Spend your money wisely
- Silver sheets protect the sheets, not the mattress. Put a washable, breathable mattress protector underneath. That is what actually keeps sweat out of the mattress.
- Silver treatments can wear down with washing. Look for sheets where the silver is woven into the fiber rather than sprayed on as a coating.
- No sheet replaces a hot wash. Wash bedding weekly, and when you can, dry it in the sun. (Be cognizant of heavy chem trailing days, with heavy metals and poison raining down.)God’s own ultraviolet light is a disinfectant too.
Silver in the Medicine Cabinet
Many in the natural living community keep nano or colloidal silver on hand, and I understand why. On the outside of the body, silver has a real track record. Silver wound gels and silver dressings for cuts, scrapes, and minor burns are sold at most pharmacies and are worth having in your preparedness kit.
But I owe you honesty, not just enthusiasm. Taking silver by mouth is a different matter. The FDA ruled in 1999 that colloidal silver products are not recognized as safe and effective for treating any disease. Silver taken internally over time can build up in the body and cause argyria — a blue-gray staining of the skin that is permanent. It can also interfere with how some antibiotics and thyroid medications are absorbed.
Keep silver on the outside
Use it for wounds, scrapes, burns, and bedding. If you are sick with an infection, do not let a bottle on the shelf delay real treatment. Some infections move fast, and the window to deal with them can close quickly.
I Am Not a Doctor — But God Is
The Lord revealed Himself to Israel as Jehovah Rapha, the LORD who heals (Exodus 15:26). Every recovery from every illness in human history has ultimately been His doing.
And Scripture shows us that God often heals through means. When King Hezekiah lay dying, God promised him fifteen more years — and then Isaiah told them to lay a cake of figs on the boil (Isaiah 38:21). Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach (1 Timothy 5:23). Luke, who wrote a quarter of the New Testament, was “the beloved physician” (Colossians 4:14). The Good Samaritan poured in oil and wine.
The warning in Scripture is not against using means. It is against trusting them instead of God.
“Yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.” — 2 Chronicles 16:12
King Asa’s problem was the order of his trust, not the doctors. Silver is a tool. Doctors are tools. Medicine is a tool. The Healer is God.
Approach This Prayerfully
Before you buy, use, or recommend anything
- Pray first. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” (James 1:5).
- Test what you hear. “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). That includes what you read on the internet, and what you read here.
- Use what has a track record. Use silver where it has proven itself — on skin and in fabric.
- Don’t delay care. Never let a natural remedy become a reason to wait when someone is seriously ill.
- Give thanks. Thank God for every means He provides, and give Him the glory for every healing.
Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Steward it wisely, guard it prayerfully, and rest in the One who knit it together.
